This Privacy Policy explains how the Lost Dutchman Marathon ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you visit lostdutchmanmarathon.org or interact with us. By using the site you agree to this policy.
1. Who we are and how to contact us

2. Information we collect
Information you give us. When you subscribe to our newsletter we collect your name and email. When you use our contact forms we collect your name, email, and message. If you use the on-site chat assistant, your messages are collected to answer your question.
Registration data. Race registration is handled off-site by Race Roster. When you register, you provide your information directly to Race Roster under its own privacy policy; we receive participant details needed to run the event.
Information collected automatically. Our host records standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages viewed, timestamps) for security and operation.
3. Cookies, chat, and similar technologies
We keep non-essential technologies behind a consent banner. The categories are:
- Strictly necessary: required for the site to work and to remember your consent choice.
- Chat assistant & session tools: our AI chat assistant is provided by Chatbase. It is off by default and loads only after you accept; when active, messages you type are processed on Chatbase servers to generate replies.
You can accept, reject, or change these choices any time using the Cookie preferences link in the footer. Our web fonts are currently served by Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when fonts load; see Section 5 for your choices.
4. How we use information
We use information to respond to your inquiries, send race news and updates you ask for, run and improve the event, answer chat questions, maintain security, and comply with law.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information with service providers that operate the site and the event, including:
- Race Roster — registration and payment processing.
- Chatbase — the AI chat assistant (only if you accept it).
- Athlinks and our timing partner — results publishing.
- Google Fonts / Google APIs — web fonts and libraries.
- Our email and any SMS provider — race communications you opt into.
- Authorities or others when required by law or to protect rights and safety.
6. Your choices and California rights
- Consent banner: accept or reject the chat assistant and other non-essential tools via the banner or the footer Cookie preferences link.
- Global Privacy Control (GPC): we honor GPC browser signals as a request to opt out of sharing for advertising (we do not run ad pixels).
- Email: unsubscribe from race emails any time via the link in each email.
- Text messages: if you opt into runner-tracking texts at registration, reply STOP to opt out.
- Access/deletion: California residents may ask us to access, correct, or delete their information, and to opt out of any "sale" or "sharing." Contact us via the contact page; we will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
7. Data retention and security
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described here or as required by law, then delete or de-identify it. We use reasonable safeguards, though no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
8. Children's privacy
The site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. Registrations for minors are completed by a parent or guardian.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. When we make material changes we will update the effective date above.
